Anyone who has been through a high school science class will likely be familiar with the term osmosis. The process was first described by a French Scientist in 1748, who noted that water spontaneously diffused through a pig bladder membrane into alcohol.
Over 200 years later, a modification of this process known as reverse osmosis allows people throughout the world to affordably convert undesirable water into water that is virtually free of health or aesthetic contaminants.
Reverse osmosis systems can be found providing treated water from the kitchen counter in a private residence to installations used in manned spacecraft.

How Reverse Osmosis Works
A semipermeable membrane, like the membrane of a cell wall or a bladder, is selective about what it allows to pass through, and what it prevents from passing. These membranes in general pass water very easily because of its small molecular size; but also prevent many other contaminants from passing by trapping them. Water will typically be present on both sides of the membrane, with each side having a different concentration of dissolved minerals. Since the water i the less concentrated solution seeks to dilute the more concentrated solution, water will pass through the membrane from the lower concentration side to the greater concentration side. Eventually, osmotic pressure (seen in the diagram below as the pressure created by the difference in water levels) will counter the diffusion process exactly, and an equilibrium will form.
The process of reverse osmosis forces water with a greater concentration of contaminants (the source water) into a tank containing water with an extremely low concentration of contaminants (the processed water). High water pressure on the source side is used to “reverse” the natural osmotic process, with the semi-permeable membrane still permitting the passage of water while rejecting most of the other contaminants. The specific process through which this occurs is called ion exclusion, in which a concentration of ions at the membrane surface from a barrier that allows other water molecules to pass through while excluding other substances.
Semipermeable membranes have come a long way from the natural pig bladders used in the earlier osmosis experiments.
Before the 1960’s, these membranes were too inefficient, expensive, and unreliable for practical applications outside the laboratory. Modern advances in synthetic materials have generally solved these problems, allowing membranes to become highly efficient at rejecting contaminants, and making them tough enough to withstand the greater pressures necessary for efficient operation. Even with these advances, the “reject” water on the source side of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system must be periodically flushed in order to keep it from becoming so concentrated that it forms a scale on the membrane itself. RO systems also typically require a carbon pre-filter for the reduction of chlorine, which can damage an RO membrane; and a sediment pre-filter is always required to ensure that fine suspended materials in the source water do not permanently clog the membrane. Hardness reduction, either through the use of water softening for residential units or chemical softening for industrial use, may also be desirable in hard water areas.
Low Pressure (Residential) Systems
Low pressure RO systems generally refer to those systems with a water feed pressure of less than 100 psi. These are the typical counter-top or under-sink residential systems that rely primarily on the natural water pressure to make the reverse osmosis process function; a typical system is shown schematically below.
Typical Point of Use Reverse Osmosis System
Counter-top units typically have an unpressurized storage tank; Under-sink units typically have a pressurized accumulator storage tank where the water pressure tends to increase as the tank fills.
This pressurized system provides sufficient pressure to move the water from the under-sink storage tank to the faucet. Unfortunately, this also creates a back pressure against the membrane, which can decrease its efficiency.
Some units overcome this by using unpressurized tanks with a pump to get the treated water where it is needed.
Low pressure units typically provide between 24 and 35 gallons per day of water (Pure-Pro System offer 50-80 gallons per day), Water purity can be as high as 95 percent of rejection. These systems can be highly affordable, under-sink units starting at about US $600.
These units produce water for a cost as low as five cents per gallon once maintenance and water costs are factored in. Maintenance usually requires replacing any pre- or post filters (typically one to four times per year); and the reverse osmosis cartridge once every two to three years, depending on usage. High Pressure (Commercial/Industrial) Systems
High pressure systems typically operate at pressures between 100 and 1000 psi, depending on the membranes chosen and the water being treated. These systems are usually used in industrial or commercial applications where large volumes of treated water are required at a high level of purity.
Most commercial and industrial systems use multiple membranes arranged in parallel to provide the required quantity of water. The processed water from the first stage of treatment can then be passed through additional membrane modules to achieve greater levels of treatment for the finished water. The reject water can also be directed into successive membrane modules for greater efficiency (see diagram below), though flushing will still be required when concentrations reach a level where fouling is likely to occur.
High pressure industrial units typically provide from 10 gallons to thousands of gallons per day of water with an efficiency of 1-9 gallons of reject water per gallon of treated water. Water purity can be as high as 95 percent. These systems tend to be larger and more complicated than low pressure systems, and this is reflected in their costs, which range from US $1000 through tens of thousands of dollars for a large, multi-module unit capable of providing desalinated drinking water for a resort facility or water bottling plant.
What Reverse Osmosis Treats
Reverse osmosis can treat for a wide variety of health and aesthetic contaminants. Effectively designed, RO equipment can treat for a wide variety of aesthetic contaminants that cause unpleasant taste, color, and odor problems like a salty or soda taste caused by chlorides or sulfates.
RO can also be effective for treating health contaminants like arsenic, asbestos, atrazine (herbicides/pesticides). fluoride, lead, mercury, nitrate, and radium. When using appropriate carbon prefiltering (commonly included with most RO systems), additional treatment can also be provided for such “volatile” contaminants as benzene, trichloroethylene, trihalomethanes, and radon. Some RO equipment is also capable of treating for biological contaminants like Cryptosporidium. The Water Quality Association (WQA) cautions, however, that while RO membranes typically remove virtually all known microorganisms and most other health contaminants, design considerations may prevent a unit from offering foolproof protection when incorporated into a consumer drinking water system.
When looking for a product to treat for a given health contaminant, care should be used to find products that have been tested successfully for such purposes at a quality testing laboratory.

Water Softener / Resins Filter
Water softener is Ion-exchange resins are used to replace the magnesium and calcium ions (white Scale remain after water boiled) found in hard water with sodium ions. When the resin is fresh, it contains sodium ions at its active sites. When in contact with a solution containing magnesium and calcium ions (but a low concentration of sodium ions), the magnesium and calcium ions preferentially migrate out of solution to the active sites on the resin, being replaced in solution by sodium ions. This process reaches equilibrium with a much lower concentration of magnesium and calcium ions in solution than was started with.
The resin can be recharged by washing it with a solution containing a high concentration of sodium ions (e.g. it has large amounts of common salt (NaCl) dissolved in it). The calcium and magnesium ions migrate from the resin, being replaced by sodium ions from the solution until a new equilibrium is reached. The salt is used to recharge an ion-exchange resin, which itself is used to soften the water, theory like a rechargeable battery.

Magnetic water treatment (also known as anti-scale magnetic treatment or AMT) is a method of supposedly reducing the effects of hard water by passing it through a magnetic field as a non-chemical alternative to water softening. Magnetic water treatment is regarded as unproven and unscientific.
There is a lack of peer-reviewed laboratory data, mechanistic explanations, and documented field studies to support its effectiveness. Erroneous conclusions about their efficacy are based on applications with uncontrolled variables. There are, however, some studies which have claimed significant effects and proposed possible mechanisms for the observed decrease in water scale.
There are two different ways to produce magnetized water in the market;
- The dynamic magnetic field or the magnetic energy, produce the magnetism by coil, to interfere the water and make it be smaller molecule, as per the way band of magnetic field, strong and weak, distant, by this theory!
- Static magnetic field or energy, such as far infrared, through some ceramics at high temperatures fired after 1000 degrees Celsius, produced 4µ to 14µ of far infrared electro-magnetic waves, to interfere with molecular agglomeration synthesis of small molecules of water. There have some magnetization equipment, are using natural magnets in the electro-magnetic field to activate water quality.

- Whether you believe that magnetic water treatment, Pi water, energy water is structural effective and making energy to the water by smaller water molecules. In sense of infiltration into small water groups, how about the unclean water, such as heavy element, will it become smaller molecules then easier to absorb by your body too?
- How can you verify their filtering effectiveness, by what method or standard? If they are using static magnetic field, what is the magnetic life? And the lasting energy period, dynamic can it be charged or plugged in, and then the static natural magnetic field what lasting?
Distillation
Making water boil to steam, collect vapor and condensate it be distill water. It can remove all material from water. The distiller machine is using this method to evaporate and condenses to distill water.
Care Instruction of using distiller
- Although it can remove most of the pollutants, it still have chance to remain the lower boiling point volatile organic compounds, such as three halogen methane, etc., may drop into the barrel collector with distilled water.
- Distiller needs high power consumption, such as a family-type distiller produce 500 ml per hour, low rated water producing speed.
- Watch out and pay attention to water tanks, there will have accumulated calcium carbonate remains. Need to clean it regularly accumulated by critic acid, otherwise the power consumption will increase and water producing ratio will low.
- Distilled water without any oxygen, cannot raise fish or irrigation!
Ozone (O3)
Ozone (O3) tri-oxygen, in 1785, the Dutch chemist Martinus van Marum was conducting experiments involving electrical sparking above water when he noticed an unusual smell, which he attributed to the electrical reactions, failing to realize that he had in fact created ozone. A half century later, Christian Friedrich Schönbein noticed the same pungent odor and recognized it as the smell often following a bolt of lightning. In 1839, he succeeded in isolating the gaseous chemical and named it “ozone”, from the Greek word ozein (ὄζειν) meaning “to smell”. For this reason, Schönbein is generally credited with the discovery of ozone. The formula for ozone, O3, was not determined until 1865 by Jacques-Louis Soret and confirmed by Schönbein in 1867.
It can also be used for bleaching substances and for killing microorganisms in air and water sources. Many municipal drinking water systems kill bacteria with ozone instead of the more common chlorine. Ozone has a very high oxidation potential. Ozone does not form organochlorine compounds, nor does it remain in the water after treatment. Recently because of food chemicals, small ozone sterilizer came into being, claiming able to break down food, vegetables and fish residues of pesticides, bacteria, purifying and sterilizing water, deodorizing, reducing color; activating skin to promote new cell skin and anti-aging metabolism … etc.
Is no doubt, ozone (O3) is better than chlorine for sterilization, friendly and environmentally. However it need a large set-up and difficult be consumable like as household appliance. Thoughtfully, the facility needs electric shocks and high-pressure pumps to create ozone, how can it be a slim consumable household appliance having enough power to kill bacteria for your daily use. Think about the two set-ups comparison, one is non-purified water and small-scale ozone sterilizer, the other is purified water without ozone sterilizing function. Put Fish, fruits and vegetables in same water level and soaking same timing? What result will be?

- Wear mask and goggle, because high concentrated Ozone will harm the mucosa of eyes, respiratory and nasal cavity.
- Please attention to Ozone concentration control and keep ventilation environment.
- When used for air disinfection, all living things should be isolated, and do not enter the area until one hour later of the machine is shut down and make sure the ozone is dispersed without harmful.
Electrolysis of water / Water Ionizer
In some areas of the world, there are obvious old age phenomenon, people less sick, the average life expectancy is high, this phenomenon began to the genetics, medicine, biology, nutrition and other scholars attention, have begun to study, to find the secret of longevity. Note: Almost water ionizer have contain a five-layer filter inside, however it can only remove sand, mud, chlorine and cannot absorb the soluble of heavy metals from water, better equipped a pre-filter for it.

Refer from the booklet “Facts about Water” by the water supplies department: when water supply from WSD resumes from a period of suspension, the sediments inside water mains may be stirred up resulting in water supply with slightly higher turbidity than normal. The contents of sediments accumulated in water mains are mainly lime, traces of iron or minerals but these sediments will not pose risks to our health or safety of water supply. In case the incident occurs, the WSD will flush our water mains at the fire hydrants in the affected areas so as to drain away the water until its clarity resumes normal. If the situation persists, the WSD will arrange water wagons to provide temporary water supply to the public in the affected areas. Management offices of premises can also inspect their roof tanks and inside service. If water with high turbidity is observed, the Management Offices can drain the roof tanks to allow the intake of clear water as soon as possible.
The truth is, nothing can see when water is flowing; sediments will appears when state, pipe cleaning service is to remove sediment from pipe, but did not improve the quality of water! What about dissolved inside water? In the water supplies department’s position, no harm for sediments less inside, but can we have an option contains nothing inside water from tap?
KDF filter
